Symbiosis of Bahi Parimarjana and Physiotherapy – NATIONAL SEMINAR

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College & Hospital Nazarathpet, Chennai which is a Dept. of SCSVMV, Enathur, Kancheepuram organized the first National Seminar on “Symbiosis of Bahi parimarjana (Topical Therapy) and Physiotherapy” in a view to integrate various valuable aspects of both the field.

Aim of the seminar being “Mutual Sharing of knowledge, which can open gates for new ideas and protocols in both fraternity and improve quality of therapy and pave way for new dimensions in research”. The seminar comprised of Three Scientific session, one paper presentation and a panel discussion.

12th November 2011(Saturday)

The seminar started with the inauguration that commenced by 10.00 am on 12th November. The inauguration kick started with invocation by the students of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College. The inaugural event was compiled by Dr.Udhay Kumar and Dr.Roshni. Welcome address was provided by Dr.Arunachalam. The dignitaries on the dies were garlanded by the staffs of the college.

  • Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof.Dr.C.V. Vaidyanathanm, SCSVMV University, presided over the function.
  • Former General Secretary, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, Dr. B. S. Desikamani, inaugurated the national seminar.
  • Prof. Dr.K. Manikkavasakam, M.D (S) Director, National Institute of Siddha, Govt. of India graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
  • Respected registrar Dr.Vishnu Potty released the special edition of the bimonthly Magazine “Ayursurabhi” exclusively on Bahiparimarjana chikitsa. All the dignitaries received a copy of the same from the registrar.
  • Prof K.S.Jayashree, Principal, SJSAC, provided the introductory speech
  • Dr.S.Rout proposed the vote of thanks.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Desikamani, stressed on the value of integrated approach and recalled the early origin for symbiosis in Indian practices which integrated both Ayurveda and exercises.

When Prof. Dr.K. Manikkavasakam addressed the audience he illustrated the similarities in Ayurveda and Siddha medical system and called for integration of the same. He also stressed on the need for doctorate courses and called this seminar as a marriage between Physiotherapy and Ayurveda.

When Dr.Vishnu Potty spoke, he made a point to both the professionals in getting involved in research process and encouraged the editorial board of Ayursurabhi to bring it out as a national journal. He also encouraged such seminars, and told he was looking for such seminars in future.

When Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof.Dr.C.V. Vaidyanathanm addressed the gathering, he made it clear that such novel steps are always appreciated by the university. He assured that in the future our college students need not travel to other states for post graduation as SJSAC college will get post graduation seats in the near future.

Followed by the inauguration Prof.Dr.K.S.Jayashree  provided the key note address where she clearly tabulated the merits and demerits of both the professionals. At the conclusion of her speech she gave a clear idea to the delegates the exact need for integration and stressed on the need to know lacunas of the respective fields and take the aid of each other if and when required.

Then the FIRST SCIENTIFIC SESSION started, the topic being “Musculoskeletal management”. Two speakers were assigned to handle the subject, one from physiotherapy and the other from Ayurveda.

Prof. Dr. N.Venkatesh, Principal, College of Physiotherapy, Sri Ramachandra University, Porur, spoke on physiotherapy management of musculoskeletal disorders.

Prof.Dr.Ramdas Maganti, Head, Dept. Kaya Chikitsa, spoke on the Ayurvedic management of the same.

The chair person for the session was Dr.Vanitha, principal, Sai Ram Ayurveda College, Thambaram,Chennai.

Then the SECOND SCIENTIFIC SESSION of the day started, the topic being “Neurological Rehabilitation”

Prof.Dr. B.S.Sridhara, HOD dept of Panchakarma, Government Ayurveda College, Bangalore, spoke on Ayurvedic management of the Neurological disorders.

Dr.R. Arunachalam, Physiotherapist, Sri Jeyendra Saraswathi Ayurveda College & Hospital, Chennai, spoke about the physiotherapy management of Neurological disorders.

The chair person for the session was Dr.Symon Hercules, Neuro Surgeon, New Hope Indian Hospitals, Chennai.

 

This concluded the first day of the seminar. A sum of 140 delegates registered for the seminar that included 54 physiotherapist and 86 Ayurvedic Professionals. All the delegates were served with Break Fast, Tea, Lunch and at last with high tea. Dinner was served for the delegates who stayed back.

13th November 2011 – (Sunday)

The day started with the felicitation of the organizers and the panel conveners by Prof. Dr. Nataraj. The editor of the magazine Dr. P.K. Moha Rana was also felicitated on the occasion.

This was followed by the THIRD SESSION of the seminar which is “Management of Obesity”.

Prof.Dr.G.S.Gopalakrishna, HOD Department of Kaya Chikitsa, Mahaveer Jain Ayurveda College, Gajendragata, spoke on the Ayurvedic aspect of Obesity management.

Prof. Dr. J. Balamurugan, Principal, Madha College of Physiotherapy, spoke on Physiotherapy aspect of obesity management.

Dr. Balaji Ravilla Baskaran, Bariatric surgeon and M.D. Noble Hospital was the chairman for the session. He also gave away the prize for the student who designed the logo for the seminar.

Followed by the tea the FOURTH SESSION, Paper presentation started. Nearly 22 papers were presented on the session from Practitioners, post graduate scholars, teachers from the host as well as other colleges. 9 physiotherapy papers and 13 Ayurveda papers were presented. There were three evaluators to rank the presentation.  Prof. Dr. J. Balamurugan, Prof.Dr.G.S.Gopalakrishna and Shri. V.S.S.N. Moorthy was the evaluators. Four prizes were given for the best paper presentations, two for Ayurveda and two for Physiotherapy.

 

Followed by lunch the fifth session commenced, which was a panel discussion between both the professionals. Prof. Dr. K.S.Jayashree, conducted the panel discussion. Prof.Dr.G.S.Gopalakrishna, Prof.Dr.J.Balamurugan, Dr.R.Arunachalam, Prof.Dr.Ramdas Maganti and Dr.P.A.Sudheer were the panel members. Various issues like wound healing, varicose veins, spondylo lysthesis were discussed apart from the three major topics of the seminar. This was followed by prize distribution for the four best paper presentations. Prof. Dr. K.S.Jayashree gave away the prizes. The programme concluded with a group photo and further agendas to continue the integration on the right track.
